So, what can you do?
understand how JEDI affect your role, and how you ca use your role to promote JEDI principles & practice
be a role model and an internal champion – take action when you can and support others
become culturally competent – learn about, appreciate and support different cultures
treat others as they wish to be treated – not necessarily the same as how you would wish to be treated
find and work with others in your organisation to drive change: it’s harder to resist several voices than one
think before you speak. Often our biases are unconscious, and so to avoid them check if what you are about to say is appropriate
check out your inner voice: that’s where learned prejudices and biases will be located, Make a decision to hear what your inner voice is saying, and challenge anything that is unhelpfu
use inclusive language – eg ‘their’ rather than an assumed ‘him’ or ‘her’; use ‘partner’ rather than boyfriend or girlfriend; avoid ‘as everyone knows’ or ‘as I’m sure you’ll agree’
success is not a straight line: accept that the right intention does not always lead to the right action; we will make mistakes – and that’s an opportunity for learning
diversity is not a single issue: you may have particular interests in one aspect of diversity – eg gender – if so, don’t pursue this exclusively – diversity has to be inclusive across the board to be effective
